Ben Treloar to Debut as a First-Class Umpire

When he takes to the field at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday, Ben Treloar becomes the 83rd NSWCUSA member to umpire men’s first-class cricket.

Treloar’s debut comes in the Sheffield Shield match between South Australia and New South Wales – a year to the day since the last Sheffield Shield match began at the Adelaide Oval.

In his fourth season on Cricket Australia’s Supplementary Umpire Panel, Treloar is also on field in the One-Day Cup match between the same teams taking place today.

Today’s match, also at the Adelaide Oval, is his second Men’s List A match after making his debut last season when South Australia hosted Tasmania at Karen Rolton Oval.

NSW State Umpiring Manager Darren Goodger said, “it takes a long time to become an overnight success.

“He has earned this first-class appointment on merit having been very patient and working his way methodically through the Australian umpiring pathway for a decade.

“We can be proud of Ben. He is an exceptional person, as real as they come, and umpire.”

Having joined the Association in 2006, he has now umpired 240 SCA matches, with 155 in First Grade.

In that time, he has overseen two Limited Overs Cup Finals and five Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup Finals.

At a representative level, Treloar has also overseen five Women’s List A matches and 25 Women’s T20 matches – including the final of both the WNCL and WBBL last season.

He attended five underage male National Championships carnivals between 2010-11 and 2015-16 – two Under 17s and three Under 19s – and officiated in U19 international series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

Treloar has overseen 13 State Second XI fixtures – in both red-ball and white-ball cricket.

He also has experience officiating touring sides, umpiring matches between the Cricket Australia XI and the Pakistanis and then the England Lions last summer as well as the Governor-General’s XI against England and New Zealand Women’s sides.

Off field, Treloar’s contribution to umpiring extends to his professional life where he is the NSWCUSA Education Officer, a role he has held since November 2019.

Goodger said, “Ben is an outstanding employee at CNSW in the area of umpire education and development, enthusiastic about training prospective umpires and doing the best he can for the members of NSWCUSA and to improve the Association.

“He inspires people to take up and love umpiring through providing excellent education and training experiences, he is an asset to CNSW and the umpiring community.”

Tasmanian Mike Graham-Smith will be his partner in the middle and Steve Davis the Match Referee, with Neil Ricketts and John Tregloan to score the match.
