Penman Makes Sheffield Shield Debut

Troy Penman becomes NSWCUSA’s 85th first-class umpire today at the MCG, taking to the field for the Sheffield Shield match between Victoria and Queensland.

Penman has been umpiring for a decade, officiating his first match in NSW Premier Cricket in 2012-13, and has been on Cricket Australia’s Supplementary Umpire Panel since 2019.

The appointment is the latest in a busy summer which has seen him involved in the One-Day Cup, BBL, WBBL and Second XI competitions.

Cricket NSW State Umpiring Manager Darren Goodger said of the appointment, “Troy’s appointment is well deserved and wonderful recognition for his attitude, teamwork and consistent performances in recent seasons and in 2022-23.

“This opportunity is one for which he is ready, earning this appointment on merit, he has been patient and diligently preparing for this moment.

“We congratulate Troy and wish him the very best for an enjoyable and successful Sheffield Shield debut.”

In 2020 he was in the middle for the WNCL Final at North Sydney Oval when Western Australia beat New South Wales for the title.

He debuted in the One-Day Cup in February 2021 when New South Wales hosted Victoria at North Sydney Oval and was on-field for the first time in the Big Bash in January 2022 at Metricon Stadium as Perth Scorchers played Sydney Sixers.

Since those debuts he has now been on-field for two men’s List A matches and seven BBL fixtures.

In his time involved in Cricket Australia’s competitions, he has overseen 25 WBBL matches in the middle and been TV Umpire for one men’s List A match, 8 BBL matches and 13 WBBL fixtures.

He umpired the Prime Minister’s XI v Sri Lanka in 2019 and has been on-field in 4 U19 men’s ODIs as well as four underage national finals in the space of three years at the male U15, U17 and U19 levels.

In NSW Premier Cricket, he has now umpired 148 matches, with 95 in men’s First Grade since debuting in 2015 at Mark Taylor Oval.

He has been on-field in six Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup Finals, including the last two, one Limited Overs Cup Final and five men’s lower grade finals with three being Third Grade.

Beyond the boundary, he has been part of the NSWCUSA Management team for 14 years and has been the Association’s Executive Officer since September 2019.

Penman will be joined in the middle by International Panel Umpire Phil Gillespie, with Bob Parry overseeing the fixture as Match Referee.

The match is scheduled to begin at 10.30am each day and will be broadcast on Kayo and cricket.com.au.
